Performance and application of 5000 series marine aluminum alloy

- Dec 25, 2018-

Marine aluminum alloy can be divided into deformed aluminum alloy and cast aluminum alloy according to different manufacturing processes. Because marine aluminum alloy has special requirements on strength, corrosion resistance and weldability, aluminum alloys for marine use are mostly used. Aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloys and aluminum-zinc-magnesium alloys, of which the 5-series aluminum-magnesium alloys are the most widely used on ships. So, what are the characteristics of the 5 series marine aluminum alloys?

There are three alloys of 5000 series marine aluminum alloys: 5083, 5086, and 5456. The 6000 series alloys undergo intergranular corrosion in seawater, so the upper structure of the ship is used more. The disadvantage of the 7000 series alloy is that it has poor corrosion resistance, so the scope of use is limited. On the whole, the 5000 series marine aluminum plate is the most widely used and most promising aluminum alloy product.

5083 aluminum alloy can be regarded as a representative product of 5 series marine aluminum plate, the state is O, H111, H112, H116, H321, etc., 5083 aluminum plate alloy composition is: aluminum Al: balance, silicon Si: ≤ 0.40, copper Cu: ≤ 0.10 Magnesium Mg: 4.0 to 4.9, zinc Zn: ≤ 0.25 manganese Mn: 0.40 to 1.0 Ti Ti: ≤ 0.15 Chromium Cr: 0.05 to 0.25 Fe Fe: 0 to 0.400, 5083 aluminum alloy has medium strength, good corrosion resistance and formability It has high anti-fatigue and is generally used as the main structure of the hull. Others such as 5052, 5086, 5454, 5456, etc., are also used in hull structures or pressure vessels, pipes, hulls and decks.

Generally speaking, the thickness of the plate is determined by the hull structure, the ship's specifications and the location of use. From the perspective of lightweight hull, thin plates are generally used as much as possible, but the depth of corrosion of the plates during use should also be considered. The sheet has a thin plate of 1.6 mm or more and a thick plate of 30 mm or more. There are also some special specifications for the use of plates according to the shipyard contract. For non-slip, the deck is made of tread plates.

From the perspective of the development of marine aluminum panels, at present, many domestic aluminum processing manufacturers have begun to focus on the development of 5 series and 6 series marine aluminum panels, increase scientific research efforts, expand production scale, and enter the high-end manufacturing market such as marine aluminum panels.

With the development of R&D and production capacity, the 5-series marine aluminum plate will usher in greater development opportunities and provide a broad space for the transformation and upgrading of aluminum processing.
