According to Reuters news, Norwegian Hydro said on Tuesday that the state of Para in northern Brazil has lifted the production ban on its Alunorte alumina refinery. At the same time, it was stated that the factory could not resume full production until the initiative was approved by the federal court.
The plant was ordered by the Brazilian authorities to cut half of its capacity during the heavy rains at the beginning of last year due to unauthorised discharge of untreated sewage.
The company said in a statement that the Pará State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development (SEMAS) issued a statement to lift the ban and said it could resume normal operations.
“We will continue to talk to the authorities to seek to resume full capacity operations,” said John Thuestad, executive vice president of bauxite and alumina at the company.
